Heavy & Fancy Origins and Explanations
Who?
Heavy & Fancy DGC is the passion project of Mike Heydlauf and Troy Hottle, disc golf bffs from Cary, NC. Mike bought the land near Lake Gaston in March of 2023 and Troy created a masterpiece of design. Since then they've spent nearly every weekend sweating, cursing and spending on the property, alongside a group of amazing volunteers from the Oxford Disc Golf club and local disc golf friends.
Why call it "Heavy & Fancy"?
When first exploring the property we found a rusted-out, old tin sign advertising "Heavy & Fancy Groceries". We figured the description makes about as much sense for a disc golf course as it does for a grocery store, so why not?
Fairway Riddles
Each red fairway sign corresponds to the hole number it is on. You can blame Mike for these.
- "The loneliest number" - A song made famous by Three Dog Night.
- "Turtle Doves" - a reference to the 12 days of Christmas
- "Mr. Owl licks" - a reference to a Tootsie Pop commercial in the 80s.
- "Golf warning" - you yell "Fore!" in golf to warn someone of an incoming disc/golf ball.
- "High?" - a reference to a "high five" or, you know.
- "9 away from a good time." - when you put 9 next to 6 you get...
- "Feeling lucky?" - 7 is a traditionally lucky number.
- "Infinity sideways" - 8 turned sideways makes the infinity symbol.
- "Are Germans good at disc golf?" - 'Nein' (pronounced 'nine') means 'No' in German.
- "2 in binary" - The digits 1 and 0 together equal 2 in binary notation.
- "Like Legolas" - Legolas is an elf from the Lord of the Rings. He's 'elven'.
- "Total sloth toes" - 3-toed sloths have 4 limbs for a total of 12 toes.
- "Baker's dozen" - A baker's dozen is 13 of something. Mike's parents were German bakers.
- "Four teens saw full trees." - Fourteen's awful trees.
- "F in hex." - 'F' is 15 in hexadecimal notation.
- "Oz in a lb" - There are 16 ounces in a pound.
- "I saw her standing there." - Beatles song. 'She was just 17, if you know what I mean...'
- "Hannibal, Faceman, Howling Mad, B.A." - Names of the characters from "The A-Team" tv show. A-Team sounds like eighteen.
